Seizing the Memes of Production
Deploying the prototypical meme format —top and bottom text with an image somewhere between —students meme-ified the sentences their reading had previously identitifed. The point was to typographically articulate the sense of the sentence and then to explore how an image might amplify, twist, or contradict the sense of the text.
In the next step of the project, students identified contemporary or historical meme formats and then collectively iterated each, trading blank templates back and forth, fitting the sentences into their rhetorical shape and, often hilariously, adding images.
