3D Typography

In this junior-level graphic design course, taught by Sharon Oiga, letterform objects are created through analog and digital methods. Students learn type anatomy, dimensional form, spatial design constructs, fabrication techniques, accuracy and handcrafting. To supplement this process, two-dimensional translations are created from the basis of the three-dimensional type. Other project components include photographic documentation, posters, process book, animation, and participation in a group exhibition.

The course begins with several weeks of workshops and short assignments. The workshops may include Introduction to the Project Lab (wood and metal shop), Introduction to the Fabrication Lab (laser cutting), Advanced Fabrication Lab (3D modeling and printing) and, for the first time, Character Workshop (design writing, taught by Instructor Meghan Ferrill). Of the various letterform objects created during this time, students select one to serve as the foundation for a larger longterm project.
