La Jaula De Oro

La Jaula De Oro is a commentary on critical issues affecting the status of my Latinx community. It portrays the struggles of immigrants coming from south of the border in search of a better life. But even if they manage to settle in the US, they endure unimaginable hardships and encounter countless roadblocks before they can even begin to achieve prosperity. It’s a never-ending struggle but a worthy one, for the sake of the next generation and generations after that. A collective struggle that will never be forgotten.

Family is at the forefront of Mexican culture. Those that came before us, our ancestors, made sacrifices impossible to repay in the course of one’s lifetime. As a people, we are continuously reminded of the things they did to improve the lives of the next generation, and generations thereafter. This kind of ‘paying forward’ is imbedded in our culture’s DNA. We all know how hard and dangerous it is to make it from Mexico to the United States for a meager chance of a better life in the Land of Opportunity. I am Mexican and I am an American citizen. My status does not indemnify me from blatant discrimination and hostile racism. As a designer I endeavor to make injustices perpetrated against Mexicans, in the past and now, tangible in literal and figurative ways, in order to promote greater understanding and empathy on both sides of the divide.
