Word Play & Adages
Word Play & Adages
I am a contrarian. I am driven by refusal. I refuse to accept things at face value. I refuse to adopt common adages and use them as ‘excuses’ for why things are the way they are. Like characterizing someone as being how they are because ‘the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.’ For starters, we are not all apples. Or the laconic ‘what will be will be,’ as if we have no say in the matter. I refuse to let notions like these to dictate how I think or respond to the world; and I want to dissuade others, too. There is nothing more limiting than the ‘herd’ mentality. As a designer, I examine my subject for what it is, what it represents, its associative meanings, and the like. Then I flip it.
