Poetic Expression Resides in Common Things
Cómo te sientes hija? How are you feeling? No lo sé, I don't know, no puedo describir este sentimiento. I can’t describe what I feel inside and what's the point if you can’t understand. We speak the same language. We are family. We entrust our lives to each other. But we can't share what's going on inside. Tenemos que ser fuertes, we have to be strong and fight. A problem is not a problem if it can’t be seen, right? As a designer, I approach such questions this way: If something’s not visible, how then can it be represented? How can an object transmit the truth of what it stands for? I create design that communicates meaning and, likewise, I infuse meaning into the work I design. I challenge myself to express the commonplace in new and vital ways; to separate an object from its meaning and create a whole new narrative for it. Design makes it possible to alter or add meaning to language, transforming a commonplace object, for instance, into a deep and even disturbing subject. A warm, protective blanket represents the suffocation of a person whose feelings remain unheard.
