It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Hempcrete

In this experimental design project, I wanted to find how I might create material and volume in a sustainable way. I came across the use of hemp stalk, known as hemp shiv, as an architectural application that is widely used in eastern europe for non-load bearing walls and insulation. I explored biodegradable additives to increase the strength of this material and the result is a material that behaves similar to traditional concrete.

Concrete is the biggest producer of the greenhouse gas CO2 in the world. This is primarily due to the immense amount of heat and energy required to process the main ingredient, portland cement. Hempcrete is carbon neutral because the carbon in the hemp is petrified into stone. Furthermore, pulverized hemp stalk is also used as a replacement for sand, a rapidly depleting natural resource due to world wide increased concrete production.
